The Navagio viewpoint at a glance
The classic photo of the Shipwreck Beach is taken from above: white pebbles, a rusting wreck and turquoise water at the foot of tall rock walls. The only upper viewing position that the 2026 rules name is the existing viewing platform on the cliff top in the north-west of Zakynthos. Looking from the platform is allowed only after the fencing and protective works along the edge of the unstable ground are finished. The municipality is responsible for that.
So the viewpoint is a conditional plan, not a sure stop. Whether the platform is open on your travel day depends on those works. Check the current status before you plan around it, and ask a tour operator whether the viewpoint is part of the programme on your date.
The rules cover the platform only. Paths along the cliff edge, fences and gaps in the railing are not part of any permitted viewing area, and nobody should walk there for a photo.

What the rules mean for your visit
Four points to keep in mind when you plan the Navagio viewpoint.
The platform comes with a condition
The ministerial decision of 28 May 2026 closes access to the danger zone and the controlled-access zone until 31 October 2026. It names the existing platform as the one place for looking down, after the protective works. A tour that lists the viewpoint as a stop therefore depends on the platform being open on your day.
No beach access from above
The viewpoint is a look, not a way down. Landing on the beach and swimming in the bay are not allowed. Do not look for a path to the water, because none is open to visitors.
Rockfall is a real risk
A rockfall on 13 September 2018 led to an evacuation of the beach. The ground at the cliff edge is unstable, which is why the works and fences exist. Stay on the platform, keep behind the railing and follow any signs or staff instructions.
Winter is a separate question
For the boat side, the harbour authority has ordered a closure of the bay from 1 November 2026 until a new joint ministerial decision. Do not assume that anything reopens on a fixed date. See the page on whether Navagio is open.
Seeing the wreck from the water
If the platform is closed on your day, the sea is the other way to see the bay. Boats may enter a defined sea zone in the north and leave it in the south. The stay is limited to 20 minutes, and at most 15 boats can be in the zone at once. Until 15:30, 10 of those places are for tourist passenger and charter boats and 5 for other vessels.
The zone is open from 15 June to 15 September 2026 between 08:00 and 21:00, and from 16 September to 31 October 2026 between 08:00 and 19:00. The skipper decides on weather and swell, so there is no departure guarantee. Swimming happens outside the closed water of the bay, at other stops on the route.

Viewpoint or boat: which one to plan
Prices are 2026 starting prices of single operators.
| Option | What you see | Conditions | Price example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Viewpoint platform | The bay and the wreck from above | Only after the protective works, status to check on the day | – |
| Island tour by land and sea | Bochali, Xigia, the viewpoint and the Blue Caves | 7 to 9 hours, the viewpoint stop depends on the platform | From €45 per person |
| Shipwreck and Blue Caves cruise from Agios Nikolaos | The bay from the sea zone, then the caves | 2.5 hours in total, no landing | From €25 per person |
| Cruise to Navagio from Zakynthos town | The bay from the sea zone | 6 hours in total | – |
| Beach landing or swim in the bay | – | Not allowed | – |
For most visitors, a boat trip is the safer plan, because it works without the platform. Treat the viewpoint as a bonus if it is open, and book a tour for the weather and the date you have, not for a single stop.
Navagio viewpoint: frequently asked questions
Is the Navagio viewpoint open?
The rules allow looking from the existing platform once the fencing and protective works are finished. Whether it is open on your date depends on those works, so check the current status before you plan around it.
Can I walk down to the beach from the viewpoint?
No. Landing on the beach and swimming in the bay are not allowed, and no path to the water is open to visitors. The viewpoint is for looking only.
Is there an entrance fee or parking price?
Do not plan around a fixed price or opening time. Ask the operator of your tour or the local authority for the current situation before you travel.
Is there a safe way to see the wreck if the platform is closed?
Yes, from a boat in the defined sea zone. The stay is limited to 20 minutes and the skipper decides on weather and swell. A boat trip does not include a landing.
Are tours with the viewpoint stop guaranteed?
No. An island tour can list the Navagio viewpoint as a stop, but the stop depends on the platform being open. Ask the operator what happens if it is closed.
Is navagio.org the official website of Navagio or the municipality?
No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to the municipality of Zakynthos, any ministry, a tour operator or a boat company.
